Itinerary
Breakfast first, then a drive to the south gate of Angkor Thom, the 'Great City'. Carvings and temples of real weight are spread across the whole ancient site. At its centre stands Bayon, the state temple, whose towers carry giant stone faces cut from single blocks. From there, walk the Terrace of the Leper King, then the Terrace of Elephants, then reach Ta Prohm, whose ruins are wrapped in roots and creepers. The afternoon closes at Angkor Wat, calling in at the Angkor National Museum for its unusual holdings of Buddhist and Hindu pieces.
An early start puts you at Angkor Wat for sunrise, the central towers standing black against the sky, before you head back for breakfast at the hotel. The day continues at the floating villages of Kampong Phluk, where life is still lived much as it always has been. A monk blesses the group, after which you drive out to the old temples at Rolous. Come evening, a tuk-tuk carries you between street food stops for a run of Cambodian specialities.
