About Cambodia
The ruins of Angkor Archaeological Park are scattered over a broad stretch of woodland and paddy. Take the famous three first — Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm — and save the outlying shrines, where you may have the place to yourself, for later in the visit. Curiosity pays off elsewhere too, in old trading towns, villages along the water and farmland where nothing hurries. Battambang has shophouses from the French period, artists who actually work there, a bamboo train, and the country’s earliest winery.
Khmer Food
Khmer cooking is a relative of Thai food with the chilli turned right down. Expect fish at almost every meal, along with broths and raw salads, and expect three tastes to keep returning: coriander, lemongrass and mint. Puddings get the same care as the savoury courses. Cooks reach for nuts, banana, coconut, jackfruit, pineapple, longan, lychee, rambutan and durian — a fruit you smell from the next room before anyone brings it in.
Multi Country
Laos and Thailand run along the top of the map, Vietnam lies east, and the southwest coast opens onto the Gulf of Thailand. Geography like that makes the kingdom an obvious pivot for a trip covering several countries. Come in by road from Vietnam or Laos, travel the length of Cambodia, then fly to Thailand — every land crossing on the Thai frontier has been shut since mid-2025 — or run the same route in reverse.
